I have Kallmann syndrome which meant I did not go through puberty. I was incorrectly labelled as a late bloomer. Even though I also have no sense of smell and poor hearing, no doctor linked it to me not going through puberty.

I was diagnosed with Kallmann syndrome at the age of 23 after being incorrectly labelled as a “late bloomer” up to that point.

I spent my teenage years and University life not having gone through puberty and having virtually zero testosterone.

At around the age of 19 or 20 I was put on low dose testosterone shots (Sustanon) but the dose was so low and with monthly injections I noticed and felt no difference.

I eventually stopped taking the shots .

It was not until I started my first job as a biomedical scientist in a London hospital that I managed to get diagnosed.

Up to this point I had never even seen an endocrinologist. I had been seen by an urologist and a general medicine consultant a few years previously but they both dismissed me as a “late bloomer".”

While at work I went to find one of the endocrinologists who worked there. I explained my symptoms and the first question he asked was “did I have a sense of smell ?”

No doctor had ever asked me this question before. A few blood tests and examinations later I had the diagnosis of Kallmann syndrome and was put on testosterone treatment.
